Michio Miyagi, known as the “Father of Contemporary Japanese Music,” incorporated elements of Western music to lay the foundation for the genre. To commemorate the 70th anniversary of his passing, shakuhachi player Michiyama Fujiwara—who deeply admired him and has spent many years researching his work—presents this special performance. This performance will feature many of Miyagi’s masterpieces, which evocatively depict the changing seasons of Japan. Alongside Fujiwara Doyama’s rich, resonant tone, the program brings together a lineup of accomplished musicians, including special guest Akiko Yazaki, as well as Chiaki Endo and Shogo Hiyoshi. The delicate yet brilliant melodies—which continue to be loved far beyond the realm of traditional Japanese music—will be vividly brought to life within the refined acoustics of Oji Hall. We invite you to come and enjoy this moment of “Kokon Kyōwa,” where history and the present intersect.
