This lecture-concert is based on Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic opera *The Mikado*, which premiered in London in 1885. Although this work was created amid the late 19th-century trend of Japonism, opportunities to stage it in Japan have been limited due to the peculiar nature of its depiction of Japan. This performance aims to reevaluate the work accurately, taking into account trends in contemporary productions, particularly those in North America. In addition to expert commentary on the work, the program will feature a concert-style performance of excerpts by accomplished singers. Please take the time to fully enjoy the soaring melodies and witty wordplay, accompanied by Japanese subtitles. Organized by the Waseda University Institute for Opera and Music Theater at the Institute for Advanced Studies and supported by a grant from the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), this event is a fusion of academia and the arts.
