★The cello performance will interweave the “overhand” bowing technique—common in cello playing—with the “underhand” bowing technique typically seen in double bass and viola da gamba performances.

Tomofumi SHIMANE

He majored in cello throughout his studies at the High School, Undergraduate School, and Master’s Program at the Tokyo University of the Arts, and earned his Ph.D. (Music, Cello) from the university’s doctoral program. He is a recipient of the Tosho-kai Award and the Graduate School Acanthus Award. His research focuses on the history of the evolution of musical interpretation and playing techniques, ranging from 17th-century viola da gamba to the cello techniques advocated by Duport in the early 19th century.

While a graduate student, he studied abroad in Paris, where he studied Baroque cello and viola da gamba at the Conservatoire Satie. He studied under A. Bilsma, E. Balsa, C. Prubow, X. Gagnupan, Hidemi Suzuki, Hiroshi Fukuzawa, Fumiaki Kono, Shohei Uemori, and Yoshihiko Terada.

His two solo CDs have been selected as recommended or notable releases by various media outlets. He is the author of the translated and edited book *Duport: Cello Technique and 21 Etudes* (Ongaku no Tomo Sha). He has performed as a soloist on NHK’s “La La La♪ Classic” and NHK-FM’s “Recital Passio.”

He organizes the Duport Listening Sessions and the Underhandlet. He serves as principal cellist and associate director of the early music orchestra La Musica Collana. He is a member of various ensembles, including Bach Collegium Japan, the Kishin Trio, and Tokyo University of the Arts Strings (TGS).

He is a part-time lecturer at Showa University of Music and a member of the university’s Period Music Research Institute. He serves as the lead instructor for the Japan Shimo-mochi Association. In recent years, he has served as a judge for numerous international competitions. He is a “three-instrumentalist” who plays the cello on both modern and period instruments, as well as various sizes of the viola da gamba, and is active as a researcher.
