This special program commemorates the 30th anniversary of the death of composer Toru Takemitsu by unraveling the world of gagaku, a form of ancient Japanese court music that deeply impressed him. The first part will feature excerpts from the classical pieces that made an impact on Takemitsu, as well as the duet "Distance" by Kanami Araki, an oboe player, and Mayumi Miyata, a leading sho (Japanese bamboo flute) player. The second part will feature a full-length performance of "Akiniwa Uta Ichigu," a large-scale work renowned as a masterpiece of modern Gagaku.
