After the death of his father, the previous king, Prince Siegfried was crowned as the new king and required to marry. Fearing the loss of his previous freedom, he hesitated to choose a marriage partner he did not love. On Siegfried's 21st birthday, friends of the court gathered to present him with a gift of a bow and arrow. In the middle of the banquet, which Benno, a chamberlain and friend of Siegfried's, hosts for Siegfried's diversion, his mother, the queen, appears. Shocked by the fuss while the court is still in mourning, the queen tells the prince that he will have to choose a bride the next day, and leaves him there dejected.
