Choral works accompanied by an orchestra or other instrumental music are the culmination of a composer's work. Bach's Matthew Passion and Mass in B minor, Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, Mozart's Requiem, Brahms' German Requiem, and many others. They are all masterpieces that those involved in choral singing would like to sing at least once. However, because they are large-scale pieces, opportunities to listen to and sing them are limited.
On the other hand, Brahms arranged the orchestral part of the German Requiem for four-handed piano in order to make it known to the public. In addition to choral music, Busoni arranged Bach's organ piece "Toccata and Fugue in Fugue minor" and Liszt arranged Beethoven's Ninth Symphony for the piano, experimenting with ways to easily enjoy these masterpieces.
This year's concert is a "trial performance," an attempt to have the audience sing and listen to works they are not usually exposed to by performing choral masterpieces accompanied by an orchestra on the piano.
The main piece was Mozart's Vespert, K.339, which may not be as well known as the Requiem, but it is a masterpiece that contains everything Mozart has to offer.
We will also perform one piece from each of Schumann's Requiem and Schubert's Mass, as well as as as many other choral works with orchestra as possible. Please look forward to it!
