The 7th concert of this series is a poetic concert structured around the two worlds of "prayer" and "magic" that have been nurtured by French music. As the subtitle "Solemn Echoes of Prayer, Vibrant Poems of Magic" suggests, the evening will be an intersection of serene, introspective spirituality and fantastical music rich in narrative.
The main program, Saint-Saens' Symphony No. 3 "with Organ," is a masterpiece with a special presence among orchestral works. The organ does not take the foreground as a solo instrument, but rather blends in as part of the orchestra, sometimes quietly as if in prayer, and sometimes resonating on an overwhelming scale. Another highlight of this performance is that the audience will be able to fully appreciate the sound of the magnificent pipe organ with 3,922 pipes, the first of its kind introduced in Asia, made by John Brumbaugh, the "fantastic organ builder" of which Toyota City Concert Hall is proud. The magnificent climax unleashed in the last movement is filled with a spirituality that deeply appeals to the inner self and leaves a strong aftertaste in the listener. (Organist: Yurie Tsuzuki)
On the other hand, in Dukas's symphonic poem "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," the music tells the story. This work, which describes the failure and confusion of a water-carrying apprentice, creates a sense of realism, as if one were watching a stage performance, with its lively rhythms and vivid orchestration. The carefully calculated structure, humor, and uncontrolled energy draw the audience instantly into a world of fantasy.
In contrast to this grandeur and narrative, Ravel's "Minuet au mise en scène" is a work of refined serenity and dignity. It is a delicate blend of respect for past styles and modern sensibilities, quietly fragrant with the esprit unique to French music. It is a piece that gives the entire concert a sense of depth and space.
The sound of prayer, the vibrancy of magic, and refined poetic sentiment. The combination of these three elements makes this concert not only a collection of masterpieces, but also an evening to experience the spirit and aesthetics of French music.
