Andreas Wirvoll, former principal viola player of the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, and Izumi Hosokawa, former principal viola player of the Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, will perform a duo viola recital.
There are not many opportunities to hear Wirvoort, who has been active at the forefront of the world for many years, perform live in Japan.
In this recital, the world of the viola will be explored through masterpieces from the Baroque to 20th century Bartók, both as a viola duo and as a solo instrument.
The program will include a duet by W.F. Bach with its elegant and intelligent dialogue of the classical period, an excerpt from Bartók's "44 Duets," in which folk rhythms and acute sensibility intersect, and works by Glière and Bowen with their romantic and extended melodic beauty. The melding of tones and tense exchanges that can only be created by two violas sharing the same instrument are the very essence of chamber music.
The violas will also perform Britten's "Cello Suite No. 1," a well-known masterpiece. This suite is widely known as a cello work, but there are not many opportunities to hear it performed live on the viola. The viola's unique range and deep sound will bring new expression and depth to this work.
The thick, lustrous tone of Vilvoorde and the delicate, depth-seeking sound of Hosokawa weave richly together in the beautiful acoustics of Wakita Cordia Hall.
