Opera "María de Buenos Aires

María de Buenos Aires is an opera created in 1968 by Astor Piazzolla, the 20th century modern tango master known for his "Libertango," in collaboration with poet Horacio Ferrer.
This is the first time this work has been performed with an original full orchestra in the Kansai region, and has attracted a great deal of attention.
The cast consists of 14 performers and boasts a scale unprecedented for a tango work.

Tango Querido, led by violinist Naho Shibata, will perform the work in opera form for the first time in Japan in 2021, followed by a concert version in 2023, which has been well received.

In 2026, it will be performed for the first time in Japan in opera form.
In 2026, this work, which has been difficult to perform locally due to the scale of its production, will finally come to the Kansai region for the first time. Performers and researchers who are well versed in classical and contemporary tango will gather at the center of this theatrical concert (semi-stage format) to get to the heart of the work.

Newly auditioned for the role of Maria are Takarazuka Revue's Mineo Joki, KaZZma, one of Japan's leading tango singers, Hideto Nishimura, a specialist in South American music and Spanish, as Duende, the storyteller of the piece, and Jun Hayakawa, winner of an international competition in Italy, on bandoneon. The leader of the group, Naho Shibata, is from the Kansai region.
The ticket price has been kept low in order to "bring this work to the people of the Kansai region," and since a deficit is expected, a crowdfunding campaign is scheduled to be held in March 2026.
