Beata Musica Tokiensis 18th Performance "Two Passions Unofficial

~Gezius' "Matthew" and "John" ~.

2026/03/13(Fr.) 19:00 Starting

Japan Christian Church, Bancho ChurchTokyo

This is a very ambitious program, performing both the "Matthew Passion" and the "John Passion" by Bartholomeus Gesius, who was active mainly in East Germany from the end of the 16th century to the beginning of the 17th century, a time when Germany was rocked by the waves of religious reform, in a single performance. The Matthew Passion is written in Latin and the John Passion in German, making this a rare example of a single composer bequeathing a Passion in two different languages, and the contrast in style is very interesting. The music of Gesius, which had a great influence on later German Baroque music, will be enjoyed in the beautiful surroundings of Bancho Church with a preliminary lecture by Takumi Kato, a researcher of the music.
