The Saxon Vocal Ensemble was founded in Dresden in 1996 by conductor Matthias Jung and has quickly grown into an outstanding chamber choir that is highly regarded both in Germany and internationally. The majority of its members are graduates of the Dresden University of Music and alumni of the Choir of the Holy Cross of Dresden. The repertoire is centered on the music of the period from Heinrich Schütz to Johann Sebastian Bach, but the choir also regularly performs works by the hidden composers of the Dresden court, as well as works by Johann Adolf Hasse, Georg Philipp Telemann, Antonio Lotti, and others from the musical environment of central Germany. The company also regularly performs works by contemporary composers. In May 2009, the orchestra performed at the "Prague Spring" festival to great acclaim. In September of the same year, she made her first visit to Japan, giving concerts and workshops in Tokyo, Osaka, Kobe, and Otsu. They attracted many audiences with their pure a cappella performance. Since its foundation, the orchestra has been contracted to record for public broadcasting stations throughout Germany, and has been invited to such renowned festivals as the Leipzig Bach Festival, the Dresden Music Festival, the International Handel Festival in Göttingen, the Rheingau Music Festival, and the Halle Handel Festival. Internationally, he has attracted attention especially for his interpretations of Bach's works. His CD recording of Bach motets won the prestigious Cannes Classical Music Prize in 2002.
