Mikiya Aisho Lute and Theorbo Recital in Commemoration of Receiving the 2024 Yao City Cultural Newcomer Award
Kawachi Otoko" seriously tackles European court music
2026/01/31(sa.) 14:00 Starting
Yao City Cultural Hall Prism Hall, Small Hall (Osaka)

The instruments used in the performance will be the lute and theorbo, ancient instruments that once graced the music of European courts and are now attracting worldwide attention. Compared to other instruments, the lute and theorbo have a limited number of players, and there are almost no precedents for full-scale solo recitals of these instruments in Japan. Mikiya Aisho, an internationally acclaimed lute player based in Frankfurt, Germany, the home of ancient music, will present a special, one-time-only musical experience.
In this performance, from the masterpieces of English composer John Dowland to the world premiere of a new work by up-and-coming Japanese contemporary music composer Wataru Mukai, you will experience how music lives on beyond the passage of several hundred years. In addition, the immortal masterpiece "Suite No. 1 for Unaccompanied Cello" by J.S. Bach, one of Germany's greatest composers, will be arranged for theorbo and performed. The richness of this piece, which seems to resonate to the very core of the body, and the beautiful low tones of the theorbo, which are full of color, will bring to light new Bach's charms.
I am honored to be invited to give a concert in Yao, where I was born and raised, as a recipient of the Yao City Cultural Newcomer Award. This concert is the realization of my long-cherished wish to bring the beautiful sounds of the lute and theorbo, two of my favorite ancient instruments, to the people of my hometown. I have prepared a variety of programs that can only be heard here, including a special arrangement of Bach's "Suite No. 1 for Unaccompanied Cello" performed on the theorbo and a new piece, "Flamingos by the Waterfront," written for me by the spirited composer, Wataru Mukai. Even if you don't know much about classical music or old music, we will present a one-of-a-kind concert that will make you think, "This is the first time I've heard this music, but it sounds so good! We look forward to seeing you all at the Yao Prism Hall.
