In this issue, we have collected classical works by the Austrian composers Haydn (1732-1809), Mozart (1756-91), and Schubert (1797-1828). In particular, we hope you will compare the mature symphonies written by Haydn in his later years and the lively symphonies written by Schubert, who was influenced by Haydn, in his youth.
◆Haydn: About the edition used in Symphony No. 103
Haydn visited London for the second time in 1794-95 and premiered six symphonies from No. 99 to No. 104 (Phase II London Symphony). In the Haydn Mozart Press edition published in 1968, the coda of the fourth movement of the London premiere version is included as an appendix at the end of the book. The Haydn Mozart Press edition published in 1968 contains the 4th movement coda of the London premiere version in the appendix at the end of the book.
In the score based on the Vienna premiere version, the second and third movements are tachetto (movement pause). However, the HMP version mentioned above has a clarinet in the third movement, especially in the trio. This edition is based on Haydn's autograph score in the British Museum, but as for the third movement, it is unclear whether it was written by Haydn or added by others, because some pages have different handwriting from Haydn's.
◆Schubert: Symphony No. 4 Characteristics
Schubert wrote six early symphonies in his youth from 1813 to 1818 (age 16-21). All of them are classical works of about 30 minutes in length, and are less often performed than the popular "Unfinished" and "Great", but among them, the fourth, nicknamed "Tragic", is performed relatively often. The nickname "Tragische" is said to have been given by Schubert himself.
The early symphonies are classical in nature and strongly influenced by Haydn and Mozart, whom Schubert admired. However, they also successfully incorporate the music of other composers who were popular at the time. For example, in No. 3, the overture to Rossini's opera, which was very popular in Vienna at the time, is incorporated. In No. 4, the influence of Beethoven's "Destiny," also in C minor, can be seen.
