The "Lecture & Concert Commemorating the 100th Anniversary of Geligi Ligeti's Birth" (vol.1 - vol.4) will be held once a year from 2023, the 100th anniversary of the birth of the contemporary music maestro Geligi Ligeti, to 2026, the 10th anniversary of his death.

Ligeti (1923-2006), an Austrian of Hungarian descent, was a composer of contemporary music who survived the 20th century, an era of war and upheaval, despite facing death many times, and continued to explore new creative possibilities beyond compositional techniques and styles. Gödel, Escher, and Bach" by Douglas R. Hofstadter was much discussed in composition classes, and Ligeti himself said, "If I were younger, I would have liked to submerge myself in information processing and make music. At that time, artificial intelligence was in its second boom, and it is thought that Ligeti saw great potential in information processing = AI.

[Lecture & Concert]
In this Vol. 3 lecture, Ligeti invited two of his former students at the Hamburg University of Music, composers Maisho Takano and Sei Furukawa, as well as Georg Heydow and Hubertus Dreier from Germany, who were also Ligeti's students. The program will trace Ligeti's trajectory as a composer, focusing on the discussions about "artificial intelligence" and "fractals" that took place in composition classes at the time.
Some of Ligeti's "Exercises for Piano" are related to "Studies for Automatic Piano" by Conlon Nancarrow. For the concert, a Disklavia (automatic piano) will be borrowed from the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, thanks to the efforts of Sei Furukawa, and Ligeti will perform both on the Disklavia and with a human player. The concert will also feature works by Ligeti's students, who have reflected Ligeti's dreams of artificial intelligence and fractals in their composition classes in their own creative activities.

Even though he was already in his mid-60s at the time, Ligeti always had an insatiable interest and passion for new things, and he must have had a premonition of the future of society and culture.
Ligeti's works and discourses are a source of advice based on his own "strength to survive" the harsh experiences of his childhood, and can serve as a guideline for those of us living in today's unstable social climate. In this lecture and concert, we would like to present Ligeti as a great composer as a creative artist, and to pass this information on to the next generation.
