Mendelssohn / Symphony No. 3 "Scotland
In 1829, Mendelssohn sent a letter to his family saying that he got the idea for the opening of this symphony from Scotland where he was traveling.
This Symphony No. 3 is the last symphony Mendelssohn composed (numbered 3 because of the order of publication of the score, but actually composed in the order of No. 4, No. 5, and No. 3), and is truly a masterpiece. While No. 4, "Italia," evokes a bright, sunny landscape, the melody of No. 3 is melancholy and mournful throughout, reminding one of a gloomy, cold Scottish landscape covered with dark clouds.
Schubert, Symphony No. 8, "The Great.
This great symphony became known after Schubert's death when Schumann discovered its autograph.
Although Schubert was famous for his songs, chamber music, and piano pieces, he told his friends that he wanted to compose a large scale instrumental piece like Beethoven. This symphony, which takes almost an hour to perform in its entirety, is a truly grand symphony for its time, and is said to be a precursor to later works by Bruckner and Mahler.
The first performance was given in 1839 by the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra. The conductor was Mendelssohn, a close friend of Schumann, who discovered the autograph.
We hope you enjoy these two symphonies, masterpieces by Mendelssohn and Schubert.
