Toshima City Orchestra 50th Anniversary 100th Subscription Concert

The Toshima City Orchestra was established in 1975 under the leadership of Toshima Ward, and held its first subscription concert on November 16 of the same year. In the 50 years since its establishment, the orchestra has given about 165 concerts, and the biannual subscription concerts have reached their 100th anniversary.

In commemoration of the 50th anniversary, this concert will feature Mahler's Symphony No. 2, "Resurrection," completed in 1894, which begins with the first movement representing the funeral of the hero depicted in Symphony No. 1, "The Giant," and continues through reminiscence and recognition of reality to the fifth movement, a song of purification of the soul, quoting the German poet Klopstock's hymn It is an 80-minute epic that leads up to the fifth movement, which stirs the hearts of the listeners.

In addition, as a prelude, the orchestra will perform Prelude to Act 1 and Prelude to Act 3 from Wagner's opera "Lohengrin". Lohengrin" was conductor Mahler's debut performance in Vienna on May 11, 1897, and was a great success.
