What kind of instrument is the fortepiano?
The fortepiano is the piano of the 18th and 19th centuries, about 200 years after the piano was invented around 1700 until it became the large, black piano of today. So, even if we say fortepiano in a word, there are quite big differences in materials, the size of the instrument, the number of keys, the detailed mechanism of sound production, etc. (and of course the tone!) depending on the period and country. (And of course, the tone!) There are quite big differences. The instrument we will be playing is a replica of the same instrument that Mozart played in Vienna.
What is this strange preoccupation of bringing a small fortepiano all the way from far away to play it, when there are wonderful grand pianos available in halls all over the world today?
For me, the fortepiano is a tool that allows me to feel music most intimately, down to the subtlest of textures and phrases, as it is, and to make it sound as it is without limit. Playing the fortepiano in concert is also an almost unalloyed pleasure for me. I am delighted to know that there are people who are listening to the joy of this sound born in my hands at this very moment, right here in this very place.
