This recital is the sixth in a recital series that has been held since 2012 under the theme "Exploring all the possibilities of the flute through the performance of Bach's unaccompanied works.
The series was held from 2012 to 2018 under the title "Bach: Enchanted by the Unaccompanied Cello Suites," a total of six projects. Then, in 2018, a second program, "Bach: With the Solo Violin Works," was launched. Both programs have featured one of Bach's unaccompanied works at a time, exploring their profound musicality and performance possibilities.
In addition, by incorporating a contemporary work in each performance, the orchestra expresses its respect for contemporary music while continuing the tradition of classical music. In this performance, we will further expand our range of expression as flutists and bring to you all the fascination that music has to offer.
Each concert has had a specific theme, but for the 6th and 7th concert, we will focus on works that are particularly memorable and works that I truly love.
Gaubert is one of the composers I particularly admire. As an accomplished flutist himself, he knew how to bring out the beauty of the flute to its fullest, and his works are full of that beauty. The "Suite" to be performed in this concert features melodies with an oriental atmosphere and a nostalgic sound.
The works by Reicha were recorded on CD by Kazuo Tokito, former principal piccolo player of the Philadelphia Symphony Orchestra, who passed away at the end of last year. When I was a student, I often played Reich's woodwind quintet, but I was not familiar with this work. However, through Mr. Tokito's CD recording, I learned about it for the first time and was drawn in by its charm. I would like to introduce this wonderful work to everyone. (Rie Shimizu)
