The Waseda University Symphony Orchestra, nicknamed "Wase-oke", is an officially recognized orchestra of Waseda University. In addition to four to five performances a year, the orchestra also performs numerous commissioned concerts. In the 16th overseas tour "Europe Tour 2024" held at the end of February 2023, the group performed in 9 cities in Germany and Austria. The tour was well received by audiences in each city.

This will be the last concert for the fourth-year students. As the culmination of the school year, the fourth-year students will deliver a spectacular performance that will move the hearts of the audience as the culmination of their four years of study.

Program

  • Overture "Carnival" Op. 92

    Antonin Dvorak.

  • Overture "Othello" Op. 93

    Antonin Dvorak.

  • Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor

    Gustav Mahler

In this concert, we will perform Mahler's Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor as the main piece and three other pieces in total.
In the 110-year history of our orchestra, this will be the first time to perform Mahler's Symphony No. 5. This is the second year in a row that the orchestra will perform Mahler's symphony, since the orchestra performed Symphony No. 1 "Titan" by the same author in the regular concert at the end of the last fiscal year. This background reflects the orchestra's philosophy of "an orchestra of tradition and innovation. Because of the rapid turnover of members in a university orchestra, we believe that it is important to pass on tradition and experience in order to continue to build on our history. Therefore, we have chosen Mahler's symphonies for the second year in a row in the hope that seniors will pass on their experiences to juniors, who will become more powerful and open up a new era. We hope that you will enjoy the performance of our orchestra, which has become more powerful after the "Waseda University Symphony Orchestra European Tour 2024" at the end of last year.

In addition, we will perform two overtures by Dvořák in conjunction with Mahler's Symphony No. 5. Dvořák's last symphonic poem "Ode to Heroes" was premiered by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra under the direction of Mahler. This connection will be the basis for this performance.
