Schubert Winter Journey

A young man who has lost his future with his loved ones and his connection with others, walks on and on through the harsh winter. He recalls the days when he was happy, carries the pain of loneliness and loss, and resists the temptation of sweet death.

This cycle of 24 songs composed by Schubert shortly before his death is a unique masterpiece that shines brilliantly not only in German song but in the history of art song throughout the world.
The young man walks across a desolate, snow-covered land, and various things appear before him. For example, a creaking weathercock, a frozen river, a linden tree gently shaking its leaves, a dog stalking and barking, a dream of spring, a storm, a graveyard, and a street musician. They speak to and are spoken to the young and to us, transcending the boundaries of reality and thought.
