The 26th Suzuki Method Cello National Competition in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the cello department
2025/04/06(su.) 13:30 Starting
It was the great wish of Mr. Shinichi Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki Method, to establish a cello department. His wish was granted and the cello department was established in January 1954, two and a half years after the return to Japan of Yoshio Sato, the first Japanese cellist to be trained by Casals. Casals' teachings from the great master were generously projected into a collection of compositions, and the story of his interaction with Suzuki children at the Bunkyo Public Hall in April 1961 is still told today. In commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the cello department, we will receive a message from the Casals Foundation in Spain, as well as a performance from children studying cello in the Valencia region of Spain. The Valencia region was severely affected by the heavy rain disaster at the end of October 2024, and they will perform for this commemoration.
We will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the founding of the Suzuki Method Cello Department on Sunday, April 6, 2025 at the Bunkyo Civic Hall Main Hall with our guest performer, Mr. Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, one of Japan's leading cellists. Mr. Tsuyoshi Tsutsumi, who once studied violin at Suzuki and is the "CD teacher" that everyone who studies cello at Suzuki listens to every day, is also a "senior" student who was awarded the Order of Culture in the fall of 2024.
The students' concert will begin with a large-scale performance of Haydn's Cello Concerto in C major, 1st movement, as only Suzuki can. Then the alumni and alumnae will join the cello ensemble works, including a cello ensemble work by Casals, and the cello students will perform together with the violin department, and the cello students will play together in unison with overwhelming power, showcasing the unique and thick sound of the cello.
Admission tickets will be available at Ticket Pia from January 20, 2025.
