We will be featuring a British composer named Philip Sparke. The first half of the concert will feature a brass band version of a work written for English brass band, and the second half will feature a work written for brass band orchestra.
Spark's works are popular all over the world, and we will present a selection of the finest gems from his repertoire. We hope you will experience what we recommend there.
Here are the latter two pieces.
Beyond Hope (Looking up, Moving on)
After the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, Mr. Spark immediately released "The Sun Will Rise Again" and donated all proceeds from the sale of the sheet music. The song "Looking up,Moving on" was composed as an answer to "The Sun Will Rise Again.
Dance Movements
This piece, commissioned by the U.S. Air Force Band, is the first of Mr. Spark's masterpieces. It consists of the following four movements.
The first movement (Ritmico), as the title suggests, begins with a jumpy rhythmic melody that is cheerful and bright in a "Latin American" style. The first movement (Ritmico), as the title suggests, begins with a jumpy rhythmic melody, and is a joyful and cheerful movement in the style of "Latin American" music.
In the second movement (Molto vivo), the tempo remains the same as in the previous movement, but the time signature changes to two beats. In this movement, the brass instruments are all tachetto, and the woodwinds, strings, and percussion instruments play. The repetition is interesting in its simplicity like a folk dance, and you will feel as if you are in a different world.
The third movement (Lento) is the opposite of the second movement in that all woodwinds are absent, and the brass, strings, and percussion instruments play in this movement. It is characterized by unusual combinations of instruments and unexpected overlapping of sounds. Although it does not incorporate a specific dance, the composer says it is inspired by "a classical ballet love duet.
The fourth movement (Molto ritmico - Molto vivace) "is a cool and sensational movement, as he says he was influenced by his "admiration for Leonard Bernstein," especially "West Side Story. There is a trick in the finale, but you will have to wait to hear it.
