●What is a Prepared Piano?

A prepared piano is a technique in which bolts, screws, or rubber are inserted between the strings of a piano to change the sound of the piano to that of a bell, wooden fish, or glockenspiel (iron zither). This allows a single piano to produce a variety of tones, sounding like a percussion ensemble.

John Cage stated in 1949 that the Steinway M piano was appropriate for performing his Sonatas and Interludes. The Steinway M is a smaller model, with a compact depth of 170 cm.

The Ryogoku Monten Hall has a Steinway M in its collection. With a prepared piano, the size and structure of the piano have a great impact on the sound, making it very difficult to reproduce the tone Cage sought with other pianos or large grand pianos. The Ryogoku Monten Hall is the only place in Tokyo where "Sonatas and Interludes" can be enjoyed most beautifully and accurately.

In this performance, the world of sound that John Cage discovered 80 years ago will be brought back to life in the present day. We hope you will enjoy this special opportunity to experience his original music.

The daytime performance will be held from 14:30 to 16:30.
Seats are filling up fast, so we recommend that you purchase your seats as soon as possible, especially if you would like to reserve S seats.

Experiencing the process of a piano becoming less a piano may be more interesting than listening to a performance.
