On October 22, composer Haruyuki Suzuki will hold a solo chamber music exhibition at the Suginami Public Hall Small Hall in Ogikubo, Tokyo.
However, this time it is not only a chamber music concert but also a film screening. Suzuki, who as a film music composer has been in charge of music for Atsuhiko Suwa's works, has been intermittently experimenting with "silent film live" since 2000, and this will be the performance of his latest work.
The film "Tartuffe" (1926) by F.W. Murnau, the great master of German expressionist silent cinema, will be projected on the horizontals of Suginami Public Hall. Accompanying this projection will be a four-piece chamber music ensemble plus Suzuki's own electronic sound/concrete performance.
Suzuki will also perform a version of "Film Strips II" (1967/70) by Takahiko Iimura, a pioneer of Japanese experimental film/video art, with music by Suzuki. This 13-minute piece was first performed at the Suntory Summer Festival in 2011 as part of the "Video and Music" program, and will be performed again for the first time in 13 years, showing its overwhelming presence over the big names such as Yuasa and Ichiyanagi.
Other works include "Reddish Green," a chamber music piece without video at the beginning.
There have been many attempts to put music to silent films, but I can assure you that this will be a most enjoyable experience.
