[Echoes Filling the Cathedral - Symphonies by Organist Bruckner
St. Florian's Monastery is located in the southern suburbs of Linz, Austria, facing the Danube River. Anton Bruckner was the organist there. He was a well-known organist at the time, but a "late bloomer" as a composer, publishing his first symphony in his 40s.
After dedicating his third symphony to Wagner, he received great acclaim for his fourth symphony, which is the subject of this issue. The title "Romantic" is based on the notation he used in his letters, and this title and its familiarity made it the most frequently performed of the nine symphonies. The chorale, which evokes the sound of an organ filling the space of a cathedral, is a characteristic of this composer, but the general pauses after the magnificent reverberations are so impressive that the premiere of No. 2 was sometimes derided as a "general pauses symphony.

Janacek was born in a small village about 200 km northeast of Vienna, also in the Austro-Hungarian Empire (present-day Czech Republic), and his "The Clever Vixen" is a colorful opera rich in allegorical elements, based on a "picture story" serialized in a newspaper in Brno. This year's performance is excerpted from Tarich and Erek's version. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Lutoslawski's death. The work consists of four pieces, including Huyarka, which has an impressive opening that imitates the sound of a folk instrumental flute. (K.I.)
