Kah Chun Wong, who has been invited by orchestras around the world to perform with PAC, will take the baton this season for Mahler's Symphony No. 6, "Tragic".
The years 1903-1904, when Mahler composed No. 6, were the most fulfilling of his life. He incorporated vocal music in Nos. 2 through 4, wrote an orchestra-only work in No. 5, and wrote a large work with a variety of instruments in No. 6. While the first and third movements effectively use cowbells, the second movement is interspersed with "rhythms like a young child waddling," and the fourth movement features shocking hammers, the work comes to a devastating end, as the subtitle "tragic" suggests.
