All Piano Works by Aeonta & Xenakis》Hiroaki Ooi Piano Recital
Xenakis "Aeonta" by Hiroaki Oi and top Japanese players
2024/09/18(We.) 19:00 Starting
The masterpiece "Aeonta" by Xenakis, one of the leading masters of postwar contemporary music, was conceived shortly after his first visit to Japan in 1961, when he saw Noh in Kyoto, and was first performed in Paris in 1964 under the direction of Pierre Boulez.
This year, on the 60th anniversary of its premiere, Toshifumi Tanaka, a Noh performer of the Kongo school, will attempt a new production.
The brass part, which is as difficult to perform as the piano part, will be performed by top Japanese players including Atsushi Takahashi. The conducting will be led by the up-and-coming Shun Oi, winner of the first prize at the First Next Generation Conducting Competition in 2022.
In conjunction with the "Aeonta," Hiroaki Oi, the only pianist to have performed all of Xenakis' keyboard works and all of his concertos, will perform all five pieces for solo piano at once.
Such ambitious programming is unprecedented in the world, even without the 100th anniversary of Xenakis' birth in 2022.
The program will also include "Piano Concerto No. 4," a masterpiece and most difficult work by Michael Finnissy, who was greatly influenced by Xenakis' early piano writing style.
This event is a commemorative event of the Japan-Greece Year of Culture and Tourism 2024, supported by the Embassy of Greece in Japan.
