Derived from Kabuki, Japanese dance has three elements: rhythmical dance, soft dance, and gesture, with the addition of dance by women.
In the modern era, it became independent from Kabuki, and many professional Nihon buyo dancers were born and became active. This refined art form, in which one can enjoy not only the beauty of the dance and music but also the narrative, has attracted many people and created a major trend in the traditional performing arts.
This year, the "Japanese Dance Caravan," which brings this rich world of Japanese dance to the whole country, will come to Niigata!
A total of about 80 people will gather in Niigata for this performance, including Shichijuro Ichiyama, the 7th Iemoto of the Ichiyama School, the first of Niigata City's intangible cultural assets, leading Japanese dancers, first-rate Japanese music performers, and staff members who will provide costumes and props to liven up the stage. A special one-day-only performance with live music will be presented.
No prior knowledge is necessary. Rakugo storyteller Katsura Yoshibo, who has a deep knowledge of traditional performing arts, will explain the highlights of the show in an entertaining manner.
The gorgeous costumes and sets, beautiful dances, and emotional and comical stories will draw you in just by watching. Please come and experience the glittering world of Japanese dance!
Program
Kimigayo Matsutake Ume" Nagauta
This piece describes the joy of pine trees, bamboo, and plum blossoms. From the solemnity of the setting, the piece depicts events associated with the pine tree and the swinging of the kakko (Japanese hourglass drum), which is associated with the legend of the plum blossoms, followed by the depiction of a woman's love for a bamboo tree that resists snow, which is later compared to the plum blossoms.
Nagauta "Otsu-e Fujimusume, Echigo Shishi
Otsu-e wisteria girls" Otsu-e refers to folk art paintings with a light touch that were sold as souvenirs along the streets of Otsu, Omi Province (Shiga Prefecture), during the Edo period (1603-1868). This time, a peaceful piece called "Ushiori," which was popular in the mid-Edo period, describes the appearance of irises blooming in Ushiori (Ibaraki Prefecture) with the heart of a young girl, and is danced in a gorgeous manner at the end of the piece.
Echigo Shishi" Echigo Shishi are street performers who came from the country of Echigo and showed their light art on street corners. The performance begins with a light appearance, beating a small drum attached to their bellies, then turns to a more remote setting in which they talk about Echigo's specialties, and then again to a light-hearted development. Waving a cloth bleach at the end is also a highlight.
Jobanjin "Yamato Dango
This dance depicts a couple selling dumplings. After the two pretend to be pounding rice cakes, the husband is asked to bake the dumplings, and the wife shows her tender heart. The dance then ends with a scene imitating a Yoshiwara brothel game, followed by a joyful dance to an arrangement of Niigata's old Bon dance song, "Sankaibushi".
Nagauta "Renjishi
This is one of the most famous Kabuki dance pieces depicting the affection and bravery of a lion father and son. In the first half, the kyogen actor describes the legend of the lion cubs falling to the bottom of the valley, only to have the strong cubs crawl up and be raised there. There is also a lovely dance of the butterfly spirit between the first and second stages.
