The Orchester des Himmels was established in 2020, mainly by alumni of the University of Tokyo's Music Department Orchestra, for the purpose of performing music that is rarely performed by amateur orchestras.
The name of the group is derived from the subtitle of the last movement of Mahler's Symphony No. 4, "Das himmlische Leben" (Life on High), which was performed at the first concert in 2022.
