Flutist Rie Shimizu has been holding a recital series since 2012, focusing on one work each from the first series: all six of Bach's "Suites for Unaccompanied Cello" and the second series: all six of his "Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin". This will be the fifth installment of the second series, which began in 2018.
The first half features two pieces from Bach's "Mass in B minor" in which the flute plays an active role, as well as the Solo Violin Sonata No. 2. The second half begins with a flute solo by Kensaku Shimizu, which was premiered by former Boston Symphony Orchestra Principal Jack Zoon and whose score is available from Ongaku no Tomo Publishing Co. Following this, two operatic fantasies, Mozart's "The Magic Flute" and Verdi's "Rigoletto," will offer numerous beautiful melodies.
