After studying philosophy at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland, he obtained a national diploma for teaching classical saxophone at the Paper Cornelius Conservatory in Germany and then at the Johannes Gutenberg University of Music in Mainz. Since then, he has been active as a teacher, soloist, and player in ensembles (saxophone quartets, saxophone orchestras, etc.), making numerous appearances and CD recordings.
In 2005, he and his Japanese wife moved to Gifu, Japan, where he has been active as a performer and teacher ever since.
He studied under the guidance of the "Lasher School" of classical saxophone. Zigurd Lasher (1997-2001) is a German-American saxophonist and a key figure in promoting the saxophone as a concert instrument in the classical field in the 20th century.
Using special mouthpieces and instruments, he has created a particularly soft, string-like saxophone tone that has always been appreciated by audiences around the world. Through his concerts, Kai Wittel hopes to bring this unique classical saxophone tradition to listeners in Japan.
