Vocal Ensemble Capella 2024 Regular Concert 1
Notre Dame Mass at Machaut

Tokyo Cathedral Sekiguchi Church St. Mary's Cathedral (Tokyo)

During the Renaissance, the representative genre of musical works was, needless to say, the Mass, and the pioneering work of the Middle Ages was the Notre-Dame Mass (Mass of the Virgin) by the 14th-century musician Machaut. The entire "Ordinary Chorus" of the Mass, beginning with the Kyrie, was composed as a single work, making it the oldest "common" Mass composed by a single composer. The mysterious chords characteristic of Machaut and the elaborate medieval rhythmic sequences in which the choruses are meticulously interlaced give the piece a completely different feel from music from the Renaissance onward. This masterpiece is performed by four male singers, one for each part. Alternating with them will be a female choir performing Gregorian chants from the Mass of the Blessed Virgin in liturgical form. Please stay tuned.
