The history of the trombone dates back to the 15th century. However, the repertoire of chamber music is extremely limited. No chamber music was written for the trombone by the great composers of the Classical and Romantic periods, when chamber music was particularly popular," says Jorgen van Rijn. 'There is some Baroque music and some new repertoire from the last 60 years, but there is a big gap there.'
The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra's solo trombonist now hopes to fill that gap by collaborating with the Alma String Quartet.
Why not start with the king of chamber music, the string quartet, if we are going to tackle this problem first," he smiles.
And with the support of the Concertgebouw Foundation and others, the recording was realized. All that remains is the live concert.
