The 2024 season will open with Symphony No. 3, conducted by Music Director Kazushi Ohno, in commemoration of the 200th anniversary of Bruckner's birth. Of the multiple versions of Bruckner's Symphony No. 3 that have survived through frequent revisions, Ohno has chosen the second version. The third movement is characterized by a coda and a large-scale finale, and is as attractive as the relatively frequently performed third version.
Ohno also has a unique sense of song selection in placing Alma Mahler's songs in the first half. Although she was forbidden by her husband to compose after her marriage to Gustav Mahler, she originally aspired to become a composer and studied under Zemlinsky. Fujimura, who received Ohno's suggestion, has in fact been wanting to sing this song for some time, and it can be said that the time is ripe for it.
