March features Andrea Battistoni, principal conductor. The program will feature works by two composers who studied past music and old texts and reconstructed them using 20th century compositional techniques. First is Respighi's "Second Suite of Old-Fashioned Dances and Arias for Lute. The third suite for string orchestra is well known, but the second suite with a slightly larger orchestra is also a delightful work in which Renaissance and Baroque music is joyfully processed with a modern sound. And Orff's "Carmina Burana" is a large work with a large orchestra, chorus, and three soloists, and the opening and closing pieces are contemporary hit numbers. Battistini and the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, which have given a number of famous performances of works with chorus, will surely provide the most dramatic experience of "Carmina" ever.
