The "Santini Collection" in the Diocesan Library of Münster, Germany, was collected and transcribed by Italian priest and composer Fortunato Santini (1777-1861), and is known as a vast collection of Italian music from the 16th to 19th centuries. The collection is known for its vast size, with a total of 20,000 titles, including approximately 4,500 manuscripts and 1,200 published scores. The Santini Collection, which is also famous for containing manuscripts by Handel and Alessandro Scarlatti, includes 20 trio sonatas and two quartets by an unknown composer with only the initials "P. M." as their names. The first ten of these have recently been released. Recently, the first ten of these pieces were identified by Italian musicologist Guido Olivieri as being by the Neapolitan composer Pietro Marchitelli (1643-1729). This discovery provides us with the opportunity to further our understanding of Marchitelli's works, including eight new compositions that complement the previously incomplete works.
The Ensemble Recreazione d'Arcadia has already performed works from the Neapolitan manuscripts of Marchitelli in 2021, but in 2024, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of its founding, the ensemble will tackle newly discovered works by the Neapolitan violin virtuoso Pietro Marchitelli. We would like to tackle a newly discovered work by the Neapolitan violin virtuoso Pietro Marchitelli.
