With the memory of the previous outstanding performance of "With Organ" still fresh in our minds, this will be the Kanagawa Philharmonic's third year in Tokyo. Mahler's symphonies, which require a large orchestra to bring out its full range of functions, are Numajiri's forte, as he has experience as general music director of European opera houses and always leads a stage of several hundred people. Expectations were high for this Mahler symphony, his first as music director of the Kanagawa Philharmonic Orchestra. In the first half, Numajiri will perform Grieg's concerto with the pianist Nieuwenieu, who has made a name for himself as a child prodigy. Nieuwenieu and Numajiri performed together at the Shanghai Expo in 2010 when Nieuwenieu was 12 years old, and this will be their first reunion since then.
