Mahler's last symphony completed

The first subscription concert of the New Year will be Mahler No. 9, directed by Artistic Director Yutaka Sado! This is the last symphony completed by Mahler.
Beethoven, Schubert, Bruckner... Mahler composed his 9th symphony with his death in mind, as his great predecessors composed their 9th symphonies at the end of their lives. Artistic Director Yutaka Sado says of No. 9, "Rather than a fear of death or separation, I feel a hope for peace and a sense of heavenly beauty. In fact, Mahler died the year after completing No. 9, leaving "No. 10" unfinished, and No. 9 has been described as not only Mahler's masterpiece but also one of the greatest symphonies of all time. PAC and Artistic Director Yutaka Sado have continued to work on Mahler in recent years. Please look forward to a new challenge following last season's "Mahler No. 7".
