The "grand motet" was the religious music played during the French royal mass ceremonies during the reign of Louis XIV. Its history began before the completion of the Palace of Versailles, and Henri du Mont and Pierre Robert were the early composers of grand motets, the originators of this genre. After the completion of the Chapelle de Versailles, four musicians were chosen as sub-masters of the choir, who were responsible for the actual music of the choir, Pascal Collasse and Michel-Richard de Lalande being two of them. The piece to be performed here is one of the first works composed during the selection process for the position of sub-master musician. The Grand Motet from this period is characterized by the interplay of small and large choruses, and instead of being divided into independent movements, it is composed of many varied sections that continue uninterruptedly. The psalmist's prayer is expressed in music of dynamic and refined taste. Only Du Mont's "Dialogue of Souls" is not a grand mote, but a small oratorio that, as the title suggests, depicts a dialogue between a troubled soul and God. Please enjoy this rare performance of a masterpiece of early French Baroque religious music.
