2023 Marugame Ninth Concert

About the Marugame Ninth
On November 16, 1914, during World War I, German prisoners of war from Qingdao, China, were interned at the Shioya Betsuin of Honganji Temple in Marugame, where they received humane treatment under the Hague Convention and began their musical activities. Later, the German POWs were transferred to Bando Camp in Tokushima, and the culmination of their activities was the first performance of the Ninth in Japan by German POWs.
It is said that the two male choruses of Marugame Camp were in charge of "chorus" and "solo baritone parts" at this time.
