Puccini's Miracle and Ravel's Fantasy
Double bill of love between mother and son

As the third installment of the Double Bill (double bill) series, Puccini's "Nun Angelica" and Ravel's "The Child and the Magic" will be performed as a coupling. The Nun Angelica is the second of Puccini's late "trilogy," in which all the characters, except for the mixed chorus in the last scene, are performed by female voices only, and is filled with a religious and lyrical atmosphere. In about 50 minutes, Puccini's eloquent orchestration unfolds a peaceful scene of nuns, a tense exchange between Angelica and her aunt, the Duchess, a dramatic turn toward grief, and a mystical miracle scene. Ravel's "The Child and the Magic," which the composer himself called a "fantasy lyric," was composed by combining elements of opera and ballet. It is a stage work that can be enjoyed as a fable for children and adults alike, with a delightful twist that unfolds from the perspective of a child. The modern harmony and rhythm unique to Ravel and the brilliant orchestration are also appealing.
Jun Awakuni, one of the most talented opera directors in Japan, will direct, and Tatsunori Numajiri, who also specializes in modern works, will conduct following "The Tragedy of Florence / Gianni Schicchi. We look forward to the contrasts that only a double bill can provide. Angelica will be played by Kiara Isoton, who has been a star in dramatic roles such as Tosca for the first time since "Tosca" in 2009. The role of the child in "The Child and the Magic" will be played by Chloe Brio, who is particularly good in this role.
