12th Concert - Reinecke and his two disciples

2023/09/18(mo.) 14:00 Starting

Tiara Koto Main HallTokyo

This year's concert will feature works by composers whose names are not well known, but whose works have only been performed on a limited basis.

Reinecke (1824-1910) is one such composer. He was active as a composer, educator, and conductor, and although his works have been published more than 300 times, not many of them are available in concert. This time, we will perform his Harp Concerto with Ms. Tamako Mitani as soloist.
As a pedagogue, Reinecke produced many famous composers, and his students include Grieg, Janacek, and Albeniz. For this concert, we have lined up works by two of his students, Bruch and Svendsen.

Svendsen (1840-1911) was three years older than the Norwegian composer Grieg and was also a conductor. After studying with Reinecke at the Leipzig Conservatory, he returned to his native Norway, where his early work "The Carnival of Paris," premiered in his native Kristiania (now Oslo), will be performed first in this concert.

Many of you may know Bruch (1838-1920) because of his famous works such as Violin Concerto No. 1, Scottish Fantasy, and Kol Nidrei. His symphonies have been performed a little more recently, but there are still not as many as there used to be. He studied with Reinecke and worked as a conductor, teacher, and composer in various parts of Germany from his 20s, and in his 40s he became the conductor of the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra in England. The Symphony No. 3, which will be performed in this concert, was commissioned during his time in Liverpool and was premiered by the New York Symphony Society.

We hope that this program of Reinecke and two of his students will allow as many people as possible to enjoy their works.
