Toshima Ward Orchestra

The Toshima City Orchestra's 96th Regular Concert will feature Bruckner Symphony No. 6, following Mahler Symphony No. 9 on May 5. Although it is said to be Bruckner's masterpiece of the middle period, it is performed infrequently among his symphonies, and many of you may not have heard of it before. The music has a different flavor from the others, as Bruckner himself said he wrote it in a daring style.

The first half is the overture to Verdi's opera "Nabucco" and Dvořák's overture "In Nature. The overture to the opera was written in the midst of Verdi's disappointment after losing his family one after another, and the first of a trilogy of overtures written by Dvořák as a return gift for an honorary doctorate he received just before he left for the United States.
