This year's program traces the evolution of Austro-German romantic music, with works by Beethoven, the pioneer of Romantic music, Schubert, the pioneer, and Schumann, the promoter.
The first half of the program features dramatic works inspired by literature.
Beethoven's Coriolan Overture was inspired by a play about the Roman general Coriolanus, which was also written by Shakespeare.
Schumann's Manfred Overture was inspired by the English Romantic poet Byron's dramatic poem of the same name.
The second half is Schubert's symphony The Great, rediscovered by Schumann. Beethoven elevated the symphony to an important form of expression, and subsequent composers have continued to sublimate it in their own styles. This symphony is one of the earliest symphonies and the first Romantic symphony.
