Gagaku Thousand Year Tradition II

Gagaku Ken Shimokuma will present "Gagaku: A Thousand Years of Tradition II" on Wednesday, August 2, 2023, at Nippori Sunny Hall (Arakawa-ku, Tokyo).

Gagaku was completed in the form of a fusion of ancient Japanese traditional music and Western music imported from the continent during the Nara and Heian periods, and has been passed down from generation to generation for more than 1,000 years. Currently, the orthodox Gagaku performance method is being handed down at the Imperial Household Agency.

There are two main forms of gagaku: kangen, in which only instruments are played, and bugaku, in which music and dance are performed. This time, we will not play kangen, but will perform three bugaku pieces.

We will be joined by guest performers Sadao Okubo and Kanki Obara, both active in the world of gagaku. Please come and join us!
