The New York Philharmonic Orchestra is pleased to present Nielsen's Fifth Symphony, a masterpiece from the symphonic cycle that Alan Gilbert completed during his tenure as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic. The enigmatic expression of the two movements, the unique and frequent modulations, and the effective use of percussion instruments, all of which are unique to the solitary symphonist Nielsen, are to be fully appreciated in this original and dense music conducted by Gilbert, who knows the charm of this work.
And in the second half, Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto with Kirill Gerstein, one of the greatest pianists of our time. This is a fitting casting to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Rachmaninoff's birth.
Same program as Promenade on 7/15.
