The 17th century was a turbulent time in Europe. England, like Japan, was an island nation, so music during the Renaissance was Galapagosized and evolved on its own with the complex rhythms of the Middle Ages. However, as soon as the monarchy was restored from Cromwell's republican regime, a revolutionary change came to music with the influx of the great wave of baroque, basso continuo, dissonance, and various dances from the continent. The program will feature the warm tones and virtuosity of various Renaissance recorders playing the masterpieces of the various composers who were responsible for the dramatic historical and musical events and changes that took place. The program will also include the delightful, somewhat sad, and charming melodies of Playford's unprecedented bestseller "The Dancing Master," a collection of tunes that delighted many aristocrats of the time, along with ornaments and diminutions of the players' own compositions.
