A shocking masterpiece by R. Strauss, one of the leading composers of the late Romantic period. Based on an episode from the New Testament, Oscar Wilde's play "Salome" was adapted into an opera by R. Strauss with colorful music. The decadent and aesthetically pleasing content of the opera caused a great sensation when it was premiered, and it became Strauss's first operatic masterpiece. In one act, the rich melodies and daring dissonances are condensed into a tense, dense drama that leaves no time to catch one's breath. The production by the late Efferding is a powerful and bewitching work with a huge old well in the center of the stage.
