Sibelius (1865-1957), Grieg (1843-1907), and Dvořák (1841-1904), who will be featured in this concert, are often introduced as representing the nationalist movement that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as national consciousness grew in neighboring European countries and music, or the "nationalist school. He is often referred to as a representative of the "nationalist school" of composers that emerged in the latter half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century as a result of the emergence of national consciousness in neighboring European countries. However, the custom of referring to various composers as a single "school" simply because they are nationalistic is unique to Japan and not to the West, not to mention the "Russian National Music School," which was a grouping of composers. Despite this, the ethnic flavor of their music is not the same as that of the Westerners. Nevertheless, all three have followed three different paths in their composing careers, each with a strong desire to become internationally accepted composers with international appeal, rather than being too ethnically oriented and remaining beloved only within their own countries.
