Gamelan Mandala of the Two Realms
2023/05/06(sa.) 15:00 Starting
The Gamelan Mandala, which is likened to a "mandala of sound," was premiered in 2020 by the Paraguna Group of West Java (Sunda) in the style of gamelan dugun. The work is a suite of eight pieces with a circular time structure based on mandala or yin-yang, with a group of gamelan instruments arranged in a circular manner on the stage like a mandala. In this performance, another suite will be added and performed as "Ryokai Gamelan Mandala.
Ryokai" is not an esoteric Buddhist concept, but means that the two suites form a pair, like yin and yang. In each suite, two pairs of male and female dancers symbolizing yin and yang appear, and one of them, Mr. Lianto, is one of the most famous Indonesian dancers.
The two pairs of "Gamelan Mandalas" will be performed in the auditorium of the Jiyu Gakuen Tomorrow Hall, which embodies the concept of Frank Lloyd Wright. Blending into the organic architectural space and shaking the bodies of the four dancers, the two sets of gamelan "mandalas of sound" will be formed.
